Explore the heart of New Zealand’s North Island in its purest form. From November to April, Whakapapa sheds its winter coat to reveal a dramatic volcanic landscape ready to explore.

Glide above the rugged volcanic landscape to take in breathtaking views, experience food or wander one of the trails within Tongariro National Park, New Zealand’s only UNESCO Dual World Heritage site.

Ride the Sky Waka gondola

A journey on the Sky Waka gondola - translated to mean ‘voyaging canoe’ begins at it's base station at 1,630m and a short walk across the plaza from the carparks.

Guests are welcomed aboard one of 48 gondola cabins, each seating up to ten people and glass encased to invite in the panoramic views. The climb of 390m or journey of journey of 1.8km takes about 12 minutes and takes you to the highest dining in New Zealand - Knoll Ridge chalet at 2,020m.

The line is slowed down in summer to allow guests to settle in, unwind and take in views out to the Central Plateau.

Take in the views

Step out into a world shaped by ancient eruptions and dramatic ridgelines, where every direction reveals a new perspective. Whether you’re here to dine at Knoll Ridge chalet or simply soak in the scenery, this is an experience that lifts the spirit as much as the altitude.
