Explore the heart of New Zealand’s North Island in its purest form. From November to April, Whakapapa sheds its winter coat to reveal a dramatic volcanic landscape ready to explore.

Glide above the rugged volcanic landscape to take in breathtaking views, experience food or wander one of the trails within Tongariro National Park, New Zealand’s only UNESCO Dual World Heritage site.

Ride the Sky Waka gondola

A journey on the Sky Waka gondola (translated as ‘voyaging canoe’ in Te Reo Māori) begins at its base station at 1,630m just a short walk from the plaza.

Step into one of 48 glass cabins seating up to ten people or upgrade to a premium glass cabin for an even better view. The 12 minute ride climbs 390m over 1.8km to Knoll Ridge Chalet at 2,020m, home to the highest dining in New Zealand.

In summer the line runs slower giving you more time to settle in unwind and take in the Central Plateau views.

Take in the views up at the Knoll Ridge Chalet

Step out into a world shaped by ancient eruptions and dramatic ridgelines, where every direction reveals a new perspective. Whether you’re here to dine at Knoll Ridge Chalet or simply soak in the scenery, this is an experience that lifts the spirit as much as the altitude.

High Tea at 2,020m

Bookings available soon!

Our spin on a classic high tea served up at Knoll Ridge Chalet is the highest in New Zealand.

A chef curated line up of savoury and sweet treats arrives on a towering stand with your choice of bottomless tea or barista coffee, plus alcoholic options if you’re keen.

High Tea not your jam? Knoll Ridge Chalet still delivers with fresh flavourful dishes and share platters for every appetite.

Explore on foot

Explore Whakapapa’s unique mix of volcanic rock, pumice, scoria and sand on foot.

With 10km of marked walks from quick 20 min bursts to 2.5 hr adventures, trails kick off from the base or the top of the Sky Waka gondola. There’s something for every ability although sturdy walking or hiking shoes will help you get the most out of the journey.

Skyline Cinema

See Whakapapa and Mt Ruapehu in a new light with short films that bring the mountain’s stories to life.

Located downstairs in Knoll Ridge Chalet, the Skyline Cinema shares everything from the science behind Ruapehu’s volcanic activity to the history and culture that shape this place. You’ll leave with a fresh perspective on the maunga.

Find your way to Whakapapa

Whakapapa is right in the middle of the North Island of New Zealand, an easy drive from Auckland, Wellington and most other North Island cities and towns. Head over for an easy short or long winter break.

Once you're in the region, you'll find it well serviced by the local villages of Waimarino (formerly National Park Village) and Whakapapa Village. From Whakapapa Village you're only a short 6km drive up a fully sealed road to Whakapapa.

The closest airport to Whakapapa is Taupō's domestic airport, with a 1 hour 20 min drive.
