Whakapapa is right in the middle of the North Island of New Zealand, an easy drive from Auckland, Wellington and most other North Island cities and towns.

Once you're in the region, you'll find it well serviced by the local villages of Waimarino (formerly National Park Village) and Whakapapa Village. From Whakapapa Village you're only a short 6km drive up a fully sealed road to Whakapapa. The closest airport to Whakapapa is Taupō's domestic airport, with a 1 hour 20 min drive.

Parking is free and available on a first come, first served basis, with around 1,800 spaces at the base area.

In summer, parking is available in the plaza and surrounding areas, making arrival simple and stress free.

In winter, always check the road status before heading up to confirm whether the mountain road is open, restricted to 4WD or chains, or closed, and whether car parks are nearing capacity on busy days. Platinum Parking is available as an optional upgrade, offering a guaranteed space closer to the base area.

Carpooling is encouraged to fill your seats, reduce congestion and help keep access smooth for everyone heading up the maunga.
