Ski and snowboard in the heart of New Zealand's North Island at Whakapapa, the magic mountain.
Spanning 550 hectares, terrain is formed by solidified lava, with snow settling consistently from June through to October, filling in the natural gullies and rocky crevasses.
Long, gentle slopes, and premier beginner facility - Happy Valley - entice first timers, affording them the space and ease of access to get the hang of turning and stopping at their own pace.
More advanced skiers and riders rejoice in accessible free ride terrain, with natural bowls, wind lips, and half pipes.

Looking for somewhere to experience the snow or maybe throw a snowball?
As snow levels build, a snow play zone will be available throughout winter—starting in June at Happy Valley and later shifting to the official Snow Play Zone at the top of the Sky Waka gondola. This upper mountain area is perfect for non-skiers and non-snowboarders and can be accessed with a sightseeing pass.
Depending on the conditions, there can be snow surrounding the plaza area, which you are welcome to play on in a safe manner.
Back for a limited time only – High Tea at 2020m returns for an early winter edition at Whakapapa from 30 May to 19 June only. Ride the Sky Waka gondola to New Zealand’s highest dining spot and experience what could be the highest high tea in the world.
Discover a different side of Whakapapa by joining one of its 47 alpine club lodges. Spread across the slopes, they offer a genuine, down-to-earth way to experience the mountain and connect with people who share a love for the outdoors. Newcomers welcome to be part of the community.
