more info and tickets

At Whakapapa, the mountain is for everyone—no matter their ability. Our adaptive programme provides the support to experience the freedom of skiing and snowboarding.

"Adaptive" means customising the sport and gear to fit individual needs. With specialised equipment like sit-skis, outriggers, and modified skis and snowboards, the slopes are open to all.

Supporting those with disabilities

Developmental & Cognitive Disabilities

Our Adaptive Ski and Snowboard Programme offers personalised lessons for people with cognitive disabilities. Our instructors are trained in specialised techniques and equipment to ensure a fun, safe, and supportive experience on the snow. We have experience teaching kids and adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, brain injuries and more.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Lessons

Our ASD lessons are designed to help build confidence, improve communication, and develop social skills—all while learning to ski, sit-ski, or snowboard. We focus on consistency and support, aligning with any existing behavioural strategies to encourage independence and progress on the mountain.

Visually or Hearing Impaired

Our instructors adapt lessons to suit each individual, using communication methods that work best for the learner—whether that’s guiding, verbal instruction, or other tailored techniques.

Adaptive Lessons

Sit Ski

Sit skiing opens up the slopes to those with limited lower body strength, wheelchair users, and people with paraplegia, quadriplegia, lower limb amputations, or developmental disabilities. We offer both bi-skis and mono-skis for kids and adults, so everyone can experience the thrill of skiing.

Please note: Sit skis have a weight limit of 200lbs (90kg) due to ski and binding capacity.

Snowboard

From first-timers to seasoned riders, Whakapapa Adaptive offers snowboarding lessons for all skill levels. Our certified instructors make sure your experience is both safe and fun, with adaptive gear available to support your learning and progression on the board.

Before you arrive

Accessible Parking

If you have a mobility parking permit, email us in advance so we can arrange a suitable parking spot with our team. If you don’t have a permit but need assistance, get in touch with the Adaptive Supervisor for support.

What to Bring for Your Adaptive Lesson

Dress for alpine conditions—layer up with warm clothing, waterproof outerwear, sturdy footwear, and eye protection. Sunscreen is a must! Helmets are mandatory for under-17s and highly recommended for everyone. If you're renting gear, a helmet is included, or you can add one for $10.

On the day

Arrival & Check-In

Please arrive at least 1 hour before your lesson to allow time for check-in and gear collection. You'll find our Snow School office at the bottom of Whakapapa Plaza—the first building on your right as you walk up from the roundabout. This is where you’ll meet our team, check in, and settle any outstanding payments.

Parking Reminder: If you require accessible parking, let us know in advance so we can make arrangements.

Medication & Personal Care

Our instructors and volunteers cannot administer medication or assist with personal care needs. If you require support in these areas, please arrange for a family member or caregiver to be available throughout the day.

Booking

Please complete the Whakapapa Adaptive Programme Form and a member of the Adaptive team will be in touch.

Please give our team as much notice as possible to coordinate with you BEFORE you arrive at the mountain to sort out lift passes, rentals and lessons. Usually, the first time on the hill will take slightly longer while we find the correct equipment for your needs as we have a lot of different equipment options.

For any enquiries, please e-mail us adaptive@whakapapa.com.
